This is a summary of the annual report of the Insurance and Benefits Trust of the Peace Officers Research Association of California, E.I.N. 68-6068469, Plan No. 501, for the year ended December 31, 2007. The annual report has been filed with the Employee Benefits Security Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).
The plan has contracts with Standard Insurance Company to provide certain life insurance and long-term disability benefits incurred under the terms of the plan. The total premiums paid for the plan year ended December 31, 2007 was $2,526,585.
Because they are so called "experience-rated" contracts, the premium costs are affected by, among other things, the number and size of claims. Of the total insurance premiums paid for the plan year ended December 31, 2007, the premiums paid under such "experience-rated" contracts were $2,526,585 and the total of all benefit claims paid under these experience-rated contracts during the plan year was $2,459,215. |
BASIC FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
The net assets of the Trust at the end of the year totaled $9,891,436 compared to $10,017,079 at the beginning of the year. The value of plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the plan, was $4,756,924 as of December 31, 2006, compared to $4,533,917 as of January 1, 2006. During the plan year, the plan experienced an increase in its net assets of $223,007. This increase includes unrealized appreciation or (depreciation) in the value of plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year, or the cost of assets acquired during the year. During the plan year, the plan had total income of $5,534,454 including participant contributions of $3,292,724, realized gains of $518,785 from the sale of assets, earnings from investments of $460,748, and other income of $1,262,197.
Plan expenses were $5,568,966. These expenses included, $3,564,804 for Long-term disability benefits paid, $390,168 for premiums paid for Long Term Disability Insurance, $261,548 for Premiums paid for Accidental Death, Group Life and AD&D Insurance, Administrative expenses of $349,794 for Myers-Stevens, $15,012 for Standard Insurance Company, $125,108 for PORAC expenses, $423,635 for Miscellaneous Expenses and $438,897 for Death benefits paid.
