The Participating Unit Plan will provide life and AD&D coverage to those associations who elect to insure 100% of their members. The plan will
provide a maximum benefit of $100,000 on a guarantee issue basis to
active members and up to a maximum of $10,000 on retired members.
You are eligible to apply for this coverage if:
a) You are actively working as a full-time sworn
police officer or any full-time employee of a law enforcement
department; and
b) You are working at least 25 hours per week, and
c) You are a member in good standing of the Peace
Officer's Research Association of California; or
d) A full-time employee of the Peace Officers
Research Association of California; or
e) You are a retired member in good standing with
either PORAC or RPOAC and your local association has chosen to
insure 100% of its membership, both active and retired members.
When is coverage effective:
Provided you are actively at work and the required
premium is paid, coverage is effective: On the date you become a
member if you apply on or before that date.
What are Life Exclusions?
If you or your insured spouse/domestic partner or
child dependent's death results from suicide or other intentionally
self-inflicted injury, while sane or insane, during the first two
(2) years of an increase in your
coverage, the benefit payable will be limited to the amount of the
premium paid for such coverage.
What are the AD&D Coverage Exclusions?
Benefits will not be paid for loss from war; suicide
or self-inflicted injury (while sane or insane); committing or
attempting to commit an assault or a felony, actively participating
in a violent disorder except in the line of duty; heart attack or
stroke; self-administered drugs, poisons or chemical compounds;
sickness or pregnancy; or medical or surgical treatment for any of
these.
How Do I Convert My Life Insurance?
If you, your spouse/domestic partner, or your
dependent children, cease to be eligible for coverage, life
insurance will continue without cost_ for 31 days.
During that time you may covert your life insurance to a
permanent individual life insurance policy (except term insurance)
without a medical examination. You must apply for the new policy and
pay the first premium within 31 days.
Who are My Dependent Children?
Children qualify for coverage from live birth through
age 20 (or through age 24 if a full-time student at an accredited
educational institution), and include your natural child, adopted
child, or stepchild or child of your domestic partner living in your
home, but do not include a full-time member of the armed forces of
any country. Disabled children may also be covered beyond the
limiting ages as provided in the group policy.
When Does Insurance Terminate?

The date your membership in PORAC or RPOAC is terminated;
-
The
date you cease to be an employee of PORAC;
-
The
date the group policy is terminated;
-
The
date your local association discontinues its group coverage
under the Participationg Unit Plan;
-
The
date you become a full-time member of the military;
-
The
date of expiration of the last period for which you made the
required premium payment;
-
The
first of the year following your attainment of age 60 should you
choose the "Termination Option" upon retirement.
Schedule of Benefits:
The
Participating Unit Plan is available to all PORAC associations who
wish to provide life insurance to all their members. Rate and plan
design will be case specific.
Continuance of Life Insurance Upon
Retirement:
Upon retirement a member has (2) options regarding the continuation
of his/her life insurance coverage
1.
Terminating Option -
Continue 100% of your Life Insurance amount in effect
immediately prior to your retirement. Coverage will terminate when
you become 60 years of age.
2.
Reducing Option -
Continue 10% of your Life Insurance amount in effect
immediately prior to your retirement. Coverage will reduce,
beginning at age 60, as provided under the Reduction in Insurance
section.
