Riverside County Deputy Sheriff Manuel Villegas (33) was killed early morning in a head-on collision on Pierce Street near 63rd Avenue in Thermal.  Deputy Villegas and another deputy were driving separate patrol cars, heading north on Pierce on a follow-up investigation of a domestic violence call.  The first deputy swerved when a red Nissan Maxima crossed into his lane, but Villegas could not avoid a collision and died at the scene.  The 64 year old driver of the Maxima was also killed.

Villegas served in the department for 17 months.  He is survived by his wife and three children.
