Nominations are now being accepted for the

“ Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor.”

“Every day, public safety officers risk their lives to protect America's citizens and communities. To honor that commitment, Congress passed the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Act of 2001, which created the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor, the highest national award for valor by a public safety officer. The medal is awarded annually by the President to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life.

As the coordinator and Designated Federal Officer for the program, I am asking for your assistance in notifying the public safety agencies within your state or territory of the opening of the nomination period for this program.  The application period opens on May 29, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. EST and is scheduled to run through July 31, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. EST.  Nominations must be submitted through the online Medal of Valor Application System. For additional information, or to apply, go to the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor website: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/medalofvalor/welcome.html
